Abstract
Streaming platforms have transformed the consumption of fictional and entertainment narratives, influencing narrative memory and emotional engagement. This chapter examines how platforms leverage narrative engagement and memory management to enhance user experience and loyalty. Narrative engagement, which involves understanding, attentional focus, emotional connection, and a sense of presence, plays a pivotal role in audience retention. This chapter explores how streaming services utilize recommendation algorithms, binge-watching facilitation, and transmedia storytelling to sustain audience engagement. Technological features, such as cross-device continuity, subtitles, and automated recaps, address fragmented viewing habits and enhance narrative memory. Emotional and cognitive strategies, including cliffhangers and gamification, further solidify user connection to content. In addition, the chapter highlights the role of social media in reinforcing narrative memory and fostering communal experiences around platform content. The discussion underscores the delicate balance between maximizing engagement and avoiding cognitive fatigue, urging platforms to innovate responsibly while fostering meaningful, memory-based connections with their audiences.
